Under new federal regulations enacted by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT),
passengers are now entitled to refunds for flights that are significantly delayed, canceled, or subject to major changes. Here's what you need to know:
1. Refund Eligibility:
Refunds are mandatory for cancellations and significant delays (3+ hours for domestic flights or 6+ hours for international ones).
Major changes, such as shifting to a different airport or a downgrade in service class, also qualify.
2. Automatic Refunds:
Airlines must process refunds automatically without requiring passengers to submit requests, ensuring a faster and smoother process. For credit card purchases, refunds must be issued within seven business days.
3. Additional Protections:
Passengers are eligible for refunds for baggage fees if their luggage is delayed beyond 12 hours domestically or 15-30 hours internationally. Refunds also apply for in-flight services like paid Wi-Fi or seat selection if those services are not provided.
These measures aim to protect consumers from the financial inconvenience of disrupted travel plans. If you believe your airline isn't complying, you can file a complaint with the DOT.
